LaunchX

“Our metric for success isn’t the creation of successful companies but the creation of entrepreneurs.”

Founded in 2012 by MIT entrepreneur Laurie Stach, LaunchX began as a selective summer program hosted on the MIT campus but has since expanded to offer a range of global and virtual experiences. Its mission is to transform motivated young people into decisive problem solvers, equipping them with the mindset to identify opportunities, prototype, user test, and pitch ideas. Since its founding, LaunchX has supported more than 2,500 student ventures, cultivating a powerful international alumni network known as Launchies.

LaunchX now operates multiple program formats, including four-week in-person summer offerings in Boston and the Bay Area (starting at $9,995), as well as three online summer programs and two online fall programs ranging from $1,995 to $6,995. Additionally, LaunchX offers a free “Becoming an Entrepreneur” online course to broaden access to its philosophy. In 2024, LaunchX expanded its ecosystem by launching AwardX, a high school entrepreneurship competition with both global and regional divisions, including a targeted program for East African students. Recognizing the importance of reaching diverse student populations, LaunchX provides need-based financial aid to help reduce barriers for underrepresented youth.

The program’s distinguishing VBL qualities are rooted in its authenticity and high expectations. Participants follow a rigorous curriculum stressing “identification, ideation, iteration, and implementation,” exploring genuine startup opportunities through customer discovery, developing Minimum Viable Products, and ultimately launching them into the marketplace. In fact, students are required to produce at least $250 in real revenue or pre-sales prior to 'Demo Day,' an accountability measure that adds rare, real-world pressure. As the program notes, “accomplishing this in the timeframe of the program is a lot! But we also know what Launchies are capable of.”

Coursework is intentionally challenging, designed by academic experts and practitioners, with topics spanning pricing, customer acquisition, legal considerations, and financial modeling. Labs and workshops integrate pitch practice, brand strategy, negotiation skills, A/B testing, and prototyping.

One of LaunchX’s greatest strengths is its demanding yet supportive environment. Throughout the four-week sprint, students receive continuous feedback from community mentors, ensuring constant refinement of their business models. Its assembly of high-caliber, motivated participants in a startup-like ecosystem helps students build the confidence, discipline, and ambition to execute quickly and collaboratively. These experiences mirror the conditions of real-world entrepreneurship, making LaunchX a powerful VBL model that equips young people to become their generation’s builders and change-makers.
